Purpose of the Job To support geotechnical engineering activities within the Design Department through the review and interpretation of soil investigation data, preparation of geotechnical calculations, foundation design support, site observation, and technical documentation. The role is intended for graduate or junior engineers with strong academic performance who will develop through mentoring, software training, and practical project exposure. Main Duties and Responsibilities 1. Geotechnical Report Review and Data Interpretation • Review geotechnical investigation reports, borehole logs, trial pits, groundwater observations, and laboratory and field test results. • Summarize soil profiles, SPT values, groundwater levels, bearing capacity, settlement data, and foundation recommendations. • Identify missing or inconsistent geotechnical information and report observations to the supervising engineer. • Prepare soil layer summaries, engineering parameter tables, and geotechnical data for design. 2. Foundation Engineering and Design Support • Assist in the design and review of shallow, raft, and pile foundations under supervision. • Prepare basic bearing capacity, settlement, soil pressure, and differential settlement calculations. • Provide foundation design inputs, including bearing pressure, soil spring values, groundwater conditions, and settlement limits. • Support foundation option evaluations considering safety, constructability, cost, and project risks. 3. Soil Investigation and Site Support • Assist in preparing Terms of Reference (TOR) and reviewing investigation scopes, including boreholes, sampling, and testing requirements. • Participate in site visits during soil investigation, excavation, foundation construction, backfilling, and compaction works. • Prepare site observation notes and report unexpected ground conditions or geotechnical risks. 4. Technical Documentation • Prepare engineering calculations using approved tools and Microsoft Excel. • Assist with retaining wall, slope stability, and soil-structure interaction inputs. • Learn and apply geotechnical software such as PLAXIS or GeoStudio where applicable. • Prepare technical notes, calculation sheets, report summaries, and maintain organized project records. 5. Coordination and Professional Development • Coordinate with structural engineers, Office Engineering, laboratories, project teams, and consultants. • Participate in technical meetings and continuously develop knowledge of geotechnical engineering, foundation design, software, and applicable standards. • Maintain professional communication and confidentiality. Qualification and Experience Education • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, Geological Engineering, or a related field. • Fresh graduates or junior engineers with excellent academic performance are encouraged to apply. • A Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering is an advantage. Experience • 0–2 years of experience in geotechnical engineering, civil engineering design, construction, laboratory testing, or site investigation. • Strong academic achievement may substitute for professional experience. Knowledge and Skills • Knowledge of soil mechanics, foundation engineering, bearing capacity, settlement, retaining structures, and site investigation. • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, AutoCAD, and familiarity with ETABS/SAFE; exposure to PLAXIS or GeoStudio is an advantage. • Understanding of Eurocode 7, Ethiopian Building Code Standards, ASTM soil testing standards, and engineering documentation. • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, communication, and teamwork skills. Key Deliverables • Geotechnical report reviews, soil investigation summaries, calculation sheets, foundation design inputs, technical notes, site visit reports, and supporting documentation for structural design.
