Job description
Job Purpose The Accountant is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, preparing financial reports, monitoring financial transactions, supporting budgeting and financial control, and ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards, SACCO policies, and regulatory requirements. Key Responsibilities · Maintain accurate and up-to-date accounting records and financial information. · Record and process daily financial transactions in the accounting system. · Prepare and post journal entries, payment vouchers, receipts, and other accounting documents. · Perform bank, cash, and general ledger reconciliations. · Monitor accounts payable and accounts receivable. · Maintain proper documentation and filing of financial records. · Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports. · Prepare income statements, balance sheets, cash-flow statements, and management reports. · Analyze financial data and highlight significant variances, trends, and financial risks. · Monitor and reconcile members’ savings, shares, loans, and other financial accounts. · Ensure accurate recording of loan disbursements, repayments, interest, penalties, and related transactions. · Support monitoring of the loan portfolio and delinquency. · Assist in preparing annual budgets and financial forecasts. · Monitor actual expenditure against approved budgets and investigate significant variances. · Support effective internal financial controls and recommend corrective actions where needed. · Ensure compliance with applicable accounting standards, tax requirements, SACCO regulations, and internal policies. · Prepare schedules and supporting documents for internal and external audits. · Monitor daily cash balances and cash movements and reconcile cash and bank accounts. · Support effective management of the SACCO’s liquidity. Knowledge and Skills . Peachtree accounting, IFRS, treasury, taxation, compliance, analytical skills, accounting software, and Excel. · Strong numerical and analytical skills. · Excellent attention to detail and accuracy. · Good knowledge of accounting principles and financial reporting. · Strong reconciliation and problem-solving skills. · Good computer and accounting software skills. · Good communication and interpersonal skills. · Integrity, confidentiality, and accountability. · Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines. · Strong organizational and time-management skills. Qualifications and Experience · Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. · 3 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably in a SACCO, cooperative, microfinance institution, bank, or financial institution.
