Job Title: Structural Drafting Technician Role Overview The Structural Drafting Technician is responsible for creating accurate, detailed, and compliant structural drawings and models used in construction and engineering projects. Working under the guidance of structural engineers, you will translate engineering concepts, hand sketches, and calculations into precise technical construction documents (2D drafting and/or 3D BIM models) that guide contractors, fabricators, and site teams during execution. Key Responsibilities 1. Technical Drafting & Detailing • Create detailed structural layouts, elevation plans, section details, and foundation plans for reinforced concrete, structural steel, timber, and masonry structures. • Produce steel fabrication/shop drawings and rebar detailing (bar bending schedules) following engineering markup and specifications. • Extract structural schedules (e.g., column, beam, footing schedules) for site construction and quantity estimation. 2. Collaboration & Technical Coordination • Work closely with Structural Engineers to interpret rough sketches, design calculations, and project constraints into formal drawings. • Coordinate structural drawings with architectural, MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing), and civil designs to identify and resolve spatial clashes or design discrepancies. • Incorporate markup changes and engineer revisions accurately and efficiently throughout project phases. 3. Quality Assurance & Standard Compliance • Ensure all drawings conform to national building codes, regional drafting standards, and internal company CAD/BIM protocols. • Perform self-checks on drawn work for accuracy, dimensioning, scale, and clarity prior to engineer review. • Maintain strict document control, maintaining organized project drawing folders, revision tracking, and issuance logs (e.g., As-Built, Issued for Construction). 4. Site Support & Communication • Assist site construction teams by clarifying drawing details or revising plans based on field modifications (As-Built drawings). • Participate in coordination meetings with design teams, project managers, and fabricators. Key Skills & Competencies • Software Proficiency: Strong hands-on knowledge of drafting and modeling software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit Structure, Tekla Structures, or MicroStation). • Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of construction methods, structural framing systems, material properties, and rebar/steel connection detailing. • Spatial Reasoning: Excellent ability to visualize 3D structural frameworks from 2D concepts or sketches. • Attention to Detail: High accuracy in dimensioning, labeling, notes, and technical callouts.
